 I don't think you missed anything. It's just good old fashioned American marketing, otherwise known as deception. You can't do much as a free member. But if you use the site, write a blog post a month or even once a week, and read and comment on other's blog posts, you can easily earn a free gold membership. The site might ask you to write an icebreaker, a sort of welcome message to members that the site will then send out at its discretion. That would get you brownie points too.  By the way, many members have a private message post, usually as the first post in their blogs. If you have any questions feel free to ask me in that post. I'm sure there are plenty of other bloggers who'd be happy to help you as well. Since you can't use the message center as yet, this might be useful to you.
